A long time ago, in a sewing room far, far away…

Written by Peg on September 1st, 2008

The following is the first in a series of Internet reruns—pages that first appeared in my old website, completeEDITion.com. I kind of liked them (and they were already written!), so I’ll just add them here every now and again. Eventually, we’ll catch up and you’ll be able to see what I’m doing now.

Zach's puppy quilt

Zack's puppy

I first started making quilts nearly 30 years ago—in fact, I just found the squares I had cut back then for a quilt for my youngest son. Like many things, quilting got pushed aside in my pursuit of a daily wage and an education (or two).

I took it up again in a serious way about in 2001, made several quilts in 2002, made pretty much nothing in 2003 and most of 2004. Part of the problem I faced was the space I had to work in and part was just the demands of my job: I was simply too tired at night to think about anything challenging.

But in the past few years, I’ve accumulated tools, books, patterns, a growing “stash,” and even a new sewing machine. I’ve finished several quilts, have several more seriously planned (i.e., with fabric already purchased), and a host more in the incubation stages.

As a person with no native artistic ability in the traditional sense, I find that quilt-making offers me—through my choices of fabric, piecing design, and quilting pattern—the chance to make something truly unique and often, truly beautiful. It’s a wonderful—and very addicting—process.

The nicest thing about having your own web site blog is that it allows you to share with others those things that mean the most to you. I hope you enjoy seeing the quilts I’ve made, those that I hope to make, and others that I’ve photographed at quilt shows. I’ve also decided to gather up some of my favorite quilting links, in hopes that you might find something useful.

I finally realized why…

Written by Peg on September 1st, 2008

I have so many half-finished sweaters, quilts, books, magazine articles: I’m just too easily distracted by next “new” thing that comes along. All too often I’ll be half-way through the back of a perfectly lovely sweater that I was in love with only yesterday — then I’ll see something wonderful at Ravelry or in the newest Interweave Knits, and suddenly I want to make that sweater instead. Or I might have been saving up a special collection of fat quarters or charm squares with a terrific quilt in mind. Then I’ll see a new book at Joann’s or maybe a recent Love of Quilting, and then I’m off on something else entirely…

No wonder I have such difficulty finishing things! <sigh>

A few years ago, I had a small website — some of you might remember it, “completeEDITion.com” — that I used to showcase some of the quilts I’d manage to finish, as well as some of the remodeling/redecorating that my husband and I had done. I enjoyed doing it (I’m a geek at heart, I suppose), but I missed being able to “talk” with the people who came to visit.

Some time later, I heard about blogs; soon I had several that I read regularly. It took me a while, but I finally I realized that this was the format I’d been looking for all those years ago.

So here I am, fellow traveler: A woman with a short attention span, who hopes to find a reason to continue putting words and images out for the world to read. I hope to use this space to share with you some of the things I’ve made over the years, discuss some of the books and movies I’ve enjoyed (or not) and why, and maybe even include some of those “house” pictures some of you seemed to enjoy so much.

I can’t promise daily postings (I do have a life, after all, one that includes a job, a long commute, hobbies, meals, oh, and a lovely man that I’d like to spend time with), but I’ll post as often as I can.

Stick around, won’t you, and let’s see where this goes…
